SUMMARY:COVID-19 and Native Communities: A Call to Action and Relationship for Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by California Foodshed Funders and First Nations Development Institute \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with Environmental Grantmakers Association\, The Funders Network\, Funders for Regenerative Agriculture\, Health & Environmental Funders Network\, Justice Funders\, Native Americans in Philanthropy\, Native Voices Rising\, Neighborhood Funders Group\, and Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders. \n\n\n\nAs the philanthropic community takes stock of the impact COVID-19 has on our operations and long-term strategies\, we must act now to move resources to communities who are hardest hit by the compounding impacts of this pandemic. \n\n\n\nCalifornia Foodshed Funders\, First Nations Development Institute\, and our national co-hosts invite you to join us for a conversation to make visible the people and issues facing Native American communities across the country as they endure this crisis. Taking the lead from our colleagues rooted in Indigenous Communities\, we will look at how this current crisis is made worse by generations of disinvestment of infrastructure and marginalization by mainstream institutions. In Navajo Nation alone\, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen beyond 1000; if it were a US state it would rank third in per-capita infection behind New York and New Jersey – yet the crises goes so much deeper than the rate of infection. \n\n\n\nJoin this webinar to hear from Indigenous leadership\, together with non–Native funders\, who aim to rise together in this moment and act together to support the health and emergency needs of Native Americans at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. Acting now in courage and reciprocity will root strategies for resilience\, health\, biodiversity and ecological protection and so much more in the leadership of Indigenous communities who have too often been left out of mainstream philanthropy (receiving an average of .4% of the annual giving from large foundations). Through dialogue and action\, we will build relationships and share resources that will help us rise to the moment\, and serve us well beyond the COVID-19 crisis. \n\n\n\nThe final agenda will be sent to registered attendees one week prior to the webinar.

SUMMARY:Regional Conversations Between Philanthropy and State Departments of Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Agriculture and Food System Funders (SAFSF) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) are pleased to co-host regional conversations for philanthropy and state departments of agriculture to share and learn from one another regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local and regional food systems in each of the four regions: northeastern\, southern\, western\, and midwestern. Right now\, we have calls set for the northeastern and southern regions and will confirm the western and midwestern regions in the coming days. \n\n\n\nWe hope SAFSF members and invited colleagues from local and regional food and ag funder networks will take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn directly from State Departments of Agriculture. \n\n\n\nJoin us for what we expect to be a lively and informative cross-sector discussion about local and regional food systems in the time of COVID-19. You are welcome to register and join one or more of the calls. We all have much to learn from one another. We know that through fostering greater collaboration we will be able to strengthen the state and regional connections and\, we hope\, build the capacity of the local and regional food systems. We look forward to the conversations.

SUMMARY:Food and Agriculture Systems in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Many funders\, investors\, and PSOs have reached out to SAFSF in the past two months for help in understanding the shocking COVID-19-related food and agriculture headlines and how they as funders should be responding. We are offering this webinar as an opportunity for all funders\, but especially those with less agriculture and food systems funding experience\, to gain historical context about systemic racism and inequity in the U.S. food system\, and to discuss how philanthropic dollars can be shifted from treating the symptoms to more effectively address underlying structural issues. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will touch on how these issues directly connect to common funding priorities: \n\n\n\nroot causes of food insecurity and solutions beyond food banks;how flawed agriculture and food systems contribute to racial and economic health disparities; andthe critical role of place-based funding in support of local and regional food and farming systems.\n\n\n\nJen Zuckerman\, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the World Food Policy Center at Duke University and Chair\, SAFSF Board of Directors\, and Ricardo Salvador\, Director of the Food and Environment Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists\, will lead the presentation and moderate an open discussion\, so bring your questions!

SUMMARY:COVID-19 & Meatpacking: The impact of production and processing consolidation
DESCRIPTION:This pandemic has clearly shown us the fragility of a livestock production and processing system that concentrates all the power in the hands of a few companies\, which extract profit at the costs of safety and health throughout the supply chain. COVID-19 has revealed the direct connection between systemic inequity and instability\, evidenced by this system’s significant impact on worker safety\, supply and distribution chains\, and farmers\, ranchers\, and communities\, in particular Tribal communities. Join us for a discussion that will promote deeper understanding and action on this issue. There are a host of issues that stem from the consolidation and concentration of the meatpacking industry. \n\n\n\nFor this 75-minute video call\, we intend to focus on the following: \n\n\n\nAn overview of the consolidated nature of meat production and processing and the issues this pandemic has revealed; The importance – and potential – of meeting the needs of everyone in the supply chain\, including those outside of it like Tribes; The role of small scale production/processing systems; andOpportunities around policy initiatives surfacing to support smaller scale\, regionally-based meat processing facilities.

SUMMARY:Stories of Creating Sustainable Food Systems on Land and Sea
DESCRIPTION:A pastor\, fisherman\, and ocean farmer share “real stories” of what it takes to create a just food system\, proving that burgeoning markets\, environmental stewardship\, and supporting communities can coexist. After the 2015 Baltimore Uprising halted food delivery\, Pastor Heber Brown founded Black Church Food Security Network\, connecting Black Producers with Black Churches. Dune Lankard – an Eyak Athabaskan Native commercial fisherman – is restoring fish and herring populations that have been reduced by 96% because of the Exxon Valdez oil spill and overfishing. Bren Smith developed a replicable regenerative ocean farming model. Their stories will inspire and challenge you.\n\n\n\nRegistration for this webinar is limited to funders only.Funders are considered those organizations or individuals using grantmaking or investments as a core strategy to fulfill their mission and who make grants or invest more than $50\,000 annually.

SUMMARY:Building Power and Shifting the Frame: Grassroots Narratives for the Future of Food
DESCRIPTION:Presented byFood and Farm Communications Fund\, GRACE Communications\, and The John Merck Fund \n\n\n\nThe Covid-19 crisis makes painfully clear the inherent injustice and fragility of an extractive food system that prioritizes profits over people. The corporations that largely control our food systems spend billions annually on marketing that promotes a consolidated model while obscuring consequences for human and environmental health\, community wealth\, and self-determination. Rural organizers are countering this spin with grassroots solutions\, uplifting the voices and experiences of impacted workers and producers into the mainstream. Speakers will share examples where rural communities have organized to challenge corporate consolidation and build grassroots power\, changing the story of what’s possible in our food systems. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this webinar is limited to funders only. Funders are considered those organizations or individuals using grantmaking or investments as a core strategy to fulfill their mission and who make grants or invest more than $50\,000 annually.
