The Forum challenges participants to understand the need for grantmakers and investors to take on risks in order to co-create more resilient\, sustainable\, and equitable food systems—and at the same time\, provides space to cultivate connections with peers so that no one organization is going at it alone. \n\n\n\nThe past two years have exposed the injustices that impact our world’s systems in a new way. The pandemic has underlined the need for sustainable investment\, creative collaborations\, and fearless mobilization. It’s clear that we need bold and steadfast commitment to build equitable and sustainable farm\, food\, and fiber systems. We must also be accountable to ourselves\, our partners\, and each other. \n\n\n\nWe invite funders\, investors\, and food system partners to gather in community in Kansas City\, Missouri on June 20-22 for the 20th Annual SAFSF Forum: Commitment & Accountability. Join peers for three days of dynamic funder-led workshops\, strategic plenary sessions\, regional site visits\, and deep relationship-building. These extraordinary times require extraordinary action\, and sessions will mobilize new connections for global\, national\, and regional issues like climate change\, consolidation\, land access\, racial equity\, and more. Through shared learning and strategic alignment\, we hope to inspire you to commit to new goals\, recommit to visions of a better food system\, and cultivate accountability in your work. \n\n\n\nWe thank these sponsors whose support of the 2022 SAFSF Forum boosts our power to convene funders across the agriculture and food system spectrum at a critical moment for philanthropy \n\n\n\nConvening Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlenary and Site Visit Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop Sponsors\n\n\n\n11th Hour Project – Agroecology Fund – Thousand Currents – Thread Fund – Woodcock Foundation\n\n\n\nNetworking Sponsor\n\n\n\nHRK Foundation\n\n\n\nFriends\n\n\n\nAvila Fund – Iowa State University – Lawson Valentine Foundation – The Lumpkin Family Foundation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHOTEL MEETING SPACES + BOOKING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Forum will take place at the Kansas City Marriott downtown. SUMMARY:Transforming Food Culture to Transform Our World: Activating Narrative Strategies to Reimagine Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:RECORDING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSLIDES\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat becomes possible when we seed and amplify transformative food narratives? Join a conversation with leading practitioners to explore the essential role of cultural and narrative strategies to reclaim and reimagine how we grow\, cook\, and gather around food.  Countless efforts to reshape food and agriculture in the U.S. perpetuate and reinforce dominant narratives rooted in extraction\, exploitation\, and white supremacy. Without intentionally addressing deep narratives to change the way we think about food\, we will continue to struggle to shift actions and behaviors that are desperately needed to meet this moment of climate crisis\, corporate consolidation\, and political polarization. When we embrace a cultural approach to food\, and invest in transformative narrative strategies\, a world that nourishes our mutual flourishing and collective liberation becomes possible. This briefing will explore orienting to a cultural framework for food systems transformation\, immersing in narratives as community activation\, the relationship between narrative strategy and strategic communications\, and offer a case study of creative activation for cultural impact.  \n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers: \n\n\n\nJovida Ross\, Director & Steward at Food Culture Collective\n\n\n\n\nFood has been a guiding force in Jovida’s life\, since her early years on her family’s organic micro-farm in Coast Miwok lands of rural Northern California. Jovida is a visionary organizer\, facilitator\, and strategist who has spent decades working with story-sharing as a cultural technology that builds community power. Before joining the Food Culture Collective team\, Jovida was the Director of Programs at Movement Strategy Center (MSC)\, where she co-founded The Transitions Initiative and led the design and facilitation of MSC’s Transitions Labs. These BIPOC-centered cross-movement learning and strategy spaces gathered more than 200 social justice movement leaders from across the country to explore the question: How do we transition our world from domination and extraction to resilience\, regeneration\, and interdependence? With Jovida’s leadership\, FC Collective has come to clearly situate our work within a movement-building context\, understanding that we are more powerful when we work in concert with others whose visions align with ours. \n\n\n\n\nShizue Roche Adachi\, Narrative Strategist at Food Culture Collective\n\n\n\n\nA storyteller\, strategist\, designer\, and creative director-at-large\, Shizue’s joined Food Culture Collective after a decade living and working in rural farming communities. Shizue’s work surfacing and crafting narrative frameworks that deeply witness and affirm us in our wholeness and support us in the messy work of collective transformation is deeply informed by her background raising livestock and her decade’s long career working with food and agriculture nonprofits\, creative projects\, and mission-driven spaces. A storyteller reaching across mediums\, her independent radio pieces have aired on Heritage Radio Network and New Hampshire Public Radio\, among others. Shizue holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Yale University. \n\n\n\n\nFabiola Santiago\, Oaxaqueña Zapoteca Chef & Creator of Mi Oaxaca\n\n\n\n\nFabiola is a Zapotec (Indigenous) migrant from Santiago Matatlán\, Oaxaca\, Mexico. She is a mother\, an outspoken thinker\, a cultural worker\, and a believer in possibilities. Her personal experiences as a formerly undocumented person and her connection to Oaxaca’s rich culture – particularly as a descendant of mezcal makers – anchors her commitment to community\, equity\, and Indigenous cultural preservation. Fabiola expresses her love for her culture through various mediums: cooking\, writing\, speaking\, and imagining a future where Native Oaxacans have cultural agency and where we have economic security. She is also creating Mi Oaxaca\, a project that centers the lived experiences\, voices\, knowledge\, and expertise of native Oaxacan people and those of the diaspora within the food and mezcal industries. Fabiola earned her BA in Sociology and Masters in Public Health from the University of California\, Los Angeles.  \n\n\n\n\nAisha Shillingford\, Artistic Director at Intelligent Mischief\n\n\n\n\nAisha is an anti-disciplinary artist\, world builder\, designer and cultural strategist originally from Trinidad & Tobago. The artistic director of the creative futures and design lab\, Intelligent Mischief\, she is an alumna of Laundromat Project’s Creative Change Fellowship\, a member of the New Museum Incubator\, and an inaugural Fellow at the Race Forward Butterfly Lab for Immigrant Narrative Strategy. Her written work has been published in Black Discourse and Grantmakers for the Arts. Her work has been commissioned by the Movement for Black Lives\, Root Rise Pollinate\, and Creative WildFire. She has a BA in Environmental Analysis & Policy\, an MSW in Social Innovation\, and an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship. She has studied Graphic Design\, Futures Design\, Design Fictions\, Design Thinking and Street Wear Design. She has been a Lead Community Organizer at the Muslim American Society Boston Chapter\, and at Close To Home DV Prevention Agency\, Director of Racial & Economic Justice at the New Economy Coalition\, Senior Associate at Interaction Institute for Social Change and Deputy Director of Innovation Strategy at Movement Strategy Center. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by SAFSF with GRACE Communications and Food Culture Collective. \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is required. SUMMARY:Funder Policy Briefing: Climate Provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act
DESCRIPTION:RECORDING\n\n\n\nSLIDES\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-hosted by SAFSF and Funders for Regenerative Agriculture (FORA) and co-sponsored by the Panta Rhea Foundation and Regenerative Agriculture Foundation.\n\n\n\nJoin the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF)\, and the Funders for Regenerative Agriculture (FORA) for Funder Policy Briefing: Climate Provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act. \n\n\n\nThe Senate just passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. It is now moving to the House of Representatives for a vote\, likely tomorrow (Friday). Here is a brief rundown on what it would mean for agriculture conservation and debt relief for distressed farmers. \n\n\n\nWith USDA conservation programs oversubscribed\, this new funding would go a long way in helping more farmers and ranchers across the country implement conservation practices that make their lands more resilient to the changing climate. In addition\, the provision in the American Rescue Plan for debt relief for farmers\, who have faced historic discrimination in accessing federal resources\, has been tied up in the courts. The IRA replaces that provision with similar but looser language\, so proper implementation of this provision will be critical. \n\n\n\nDuring this funder policy briefing\, you will hear from leading policy experts about what this bill means for climate change\, agriculture\, conservation\, and debt relief for farmers of color. In addition\, speakers will also touch on what the immediate implementation issues are they will be working on with USDA\, as well as what this means for the upcoming farm bill debate. Speakers include: \n\n\n\nFerd Hoefner\, Farm\, Food and Environment Consulting – confirmedMike Lavender\, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition – confirmedDãnia Davy\, Federation of Southern Cooperatives – invited\n\n\n\nThis is a free\, funder-only event. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Honoring Silent Spring: Stories from the Frontlines of the Fight for a Pesticide-Free Future
DESCRIPTION:Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSixty years ago\, Rachel Carson released her seminal book\, Silent Spring\, whose publication gave birth to the EPA\, Clean Water Act\, Clean Air Act\, and sparked the ban on the toxic insecticide DDT and the movement for organic agriculture. Six decades on\, the threats Carson warned about are still very real\, as pesticide use continues to decimate ecosystems and our bodies\, leading to an untold number of cancers\, neurological disorders\, premature deaths\, and reproductive problems. Today\, we know another devastating cost: the grave consequences of pesticides\, like all the petrochemicals\, on our climate.  \n\n\n\nIn this engaging webinar\, we’ll hear about what’s at stake and what we can do about it. This webinar is for everyone eager to learn\, get inspired\, and take action to carry on the legacy of Silent Spring. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nModerator: Anna Lappé\, author and advocate\, Panta Rhea Foundation / Real Food Media Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) (invited) Angel Garcia\, co-director\, Californians for Pesticide ReformCarey Gillam\, journalist and author\, The Monsanto PapersKendra Klein\, deputy director of science\, Friends of the EarthGeorge Naylor\, organic farmer and member of the boards of Family Farm Defenders & the Center for Food Safety\n\n\n\nSponsored by Real Food Media and Friends of the EarthCo-Sponsored by SAFSF and 37 other organizations and funder networks.

SUMMARY:Crop Insurance Reform and 2023 Farm Bill Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Recording\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF)\, and the Funders for Regenerative Agriculture (FORA) for Funder Policy Briefing: Crop Insurance Reform and 2023 Farm Bill Opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) recently published a special report projecting billions in taxpayer savings over 10 years if payment caps are instituted on federal subsidies paid to farmers who purchase crop insurance. The report\, An Economic Analysis of Payment Caps on Crop Insurance Subsidies\, was written by Dr. Eric J. Belasco\, a professor of agricultural economics at Montana State University who specializes in the study of federal agricultural support programs and risk management. \n\n\n\nOur guest speakers will walk us through an overview of crop insurance and the findings of the report\, as well as how it connects to the broader issues of climate change and conservation\, access to land and equity within USDA resources. We will also discuss the narratives and political landscape for this issue and where philanthropic engagement can make a positive impact. \n\n\n\nSPEAKERS: \n\n\n\nBilly Hackett\, policy specialist\, National Sustainable Agriculture CoalitionDr. Eric J. Belasco\, professor of agricultural economics\, Montana State University\n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by Regenerative Agriculture Foundation and McKnight Foundation. \n\n\n\nThis is a free\, funder-only event. SUMMARY:Request for Proposals - 2023 SAFSF Forum & Webinar Content
DESCRIPTION:The RFP Deadline has passed. \n\n\n\nAbout the RFP\n\n\n\nMember-driven content makes up an important part of SAFSF’s annual schedule of activities that help agriculture and food systems funders connect with each other\, learn about the field and each other’s work\, and amplify their impact through aligned action. \n\n\n\nIdeas submitted through this RFP may be considered: \n\n\n\n\nfor inclusion as an in-person workshop session or learning dinner at the June 2023 SAFSF Forum in Washington\, DC; or \n\n\n\nas a virtual webinar or series of webinars at another point in the year. \n\n\n\n\nSubmission is open to any active funding organization; SAFSF membership is not required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRequirements for Webinar and Forum Content Proposals\n\n\n\nSessions proposed for either a webinar or the Forum should: \n\n\n\n\nHighlight agriculture and food systems issues and solutions that are timely\, actionable\, equity-centered\, and aligned with SAFSF’s values.\n\n\n\nAllow speakers and participants to exchange information\, expertise\, lessons learned\, and/or points of view in a way that benefits their individual and collective practice.\n\n\n\nHelp participants connect with each other to build relationships\, discover areas of shared work\, analyze funding strategies\, and explore future collaborations.\n\n\n\nEngage and connect a diverse range of funder and invited practitioner participants who reflect different parts of agriculture and food systems relevant to the session topic.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPolicy Considerations\n\n\n\nWe encourage policy-focused proposals that help funders learn\, engage and develop collaborative strategies on federal\, state\, tribal\, and/or local policy\, as well as grassroots community organizing and power building to influence public policy.  We expect that half of the sessions presented at the 2023 SAFSF Forum and throughout the year will have a policy focus. \n\n\n\nKey areas of policy interest include discussions of policy priorities\, advocacy\, and funding strategies related to: \n\n\n\n\nThe farm bill and key states represented on Congressional agriculture and appropriations committees\n\n\n\nChild Nutrition Reauthorization and other nutrition incentives legislation\n\n\n\nUSDA funding and equity programs\n\n\n\nState legislative policy issues/campaigns\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFocus Areas\n\n\n\nWe also encourage both general and policy-specific proposals to be mindful of the Focus Areas we will continue to emphasize in 2023: \n\n\n\n\nClimate change;\n\n\n\nConsolidation and concentration; and\n\n\n\nLand access.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Considerations for Forum Content Proposals\n\n\n\nProposals for the SAFSF Forum must have strong interactive\, storytelling\, movement\, collaboration\, hands-on\, or other elements that make a compelling case for in-person presentation. We do not anticipate offering a virtual or hybrid option for Forum participation. Both workshop sessions and learning dinners will take place in concurrent blocks. \n\n\n\nWorkshop Sessions\n\n\n\nFunders whose proposals are accepted as workshop sessions are expected to pay the registration and travel expenses for themselves and any non-funder speakers included in their presentation. We also encourage funders to support their non-funder speakers with honoraria for their participation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearning Dinners\n\n\n\nYou may also submit your proposal for consideration as a learning dinner. The learning dinner format is best suited to a less formal presentation style and topics that lend themselves to lively table conversations. In addition to the costs above\, funders whose proposals are accepted as learning dinners are also expected to underwrite the full cost of food and drink for those dinners. (Attendance numbers may be capped depending on the capacity of the chosen venue\, either in the conference hotel or at a nearby restaurant.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeadlines and Questions? \n\n\n\nAs mentioned above\, SAFSF is pleased to accept content for 2023 SAFSF Forum and webinars from all funders\, even those who are not members of SAFSF. Proposals must be submitted online by 11:59 PM PT on Monday\, January 9\, 2023. Visit our website to familiarize yourself with the Forum theme and to find full RFP submission process details. If you have questions\, please reach out to SAFSF Program Director\, Erin Olschewski at erin@safsf.org.

SUMMARY:Agrochemicals: The Next Frontier in the Fight Against the Fossil Fuel Economy
DESCRIPTION:Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin other funders to explore the urgent need to take on agrochemicals as a core component of a just transition away from fossil fuels. Co-hosted by Health and Environmental Funders Network and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, leaders from the field will provide an overview of the fossil fuel-derived agrochemical supply chain and its impacts on communities mobilizing against it in the US Gulf South and globally. These leaders will then join funders to discuss what a vibrant\, cross-sector\, global-to-local strategy to transition away from these chemicals looks like\, with time allotted for funder-only discussion at the end of the call. \n\n\n\nFossil fuel-derived fertilizers and pesticides have significant climate impacts along their life cycles* and are major drivers of toxic pollution and biodiversity loss for communities where they’re made\, where they’re used\, and where they create toxic runoff.    \n\n\n\nFew are aware of the way our food systems are tethered to the fossil fuel economy\, and of the growing role agrochemicals play in propping it up\, including the current promotion of carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a mechanism to greenwash agrochemical companies as “clean energy companies” and cash in on generous new government subsidies. \n\n\n\nAgrochemical and fossil fuel companies are operating or actively exploring dozens of new or expanded production facilities across the world\, including projects in eight US states already affected by polluting industries. Communities are already fighting and winning against some of these expansions.   \n\n\n\nJoin the webinar to hear about current and emerging funding and organizing strategies\, where there are gaps\, and how others are sifting through confusing messaging and the immensity of the challenge to identify bold strategies to meet the urgency of the moment. \n\n\n\n* For example\, nitrogen fertilizers alone contribute 2% of global GHGs\, which is more than the aviation sector! The food system accounts for approximately one third of global GHG emissions. \n\n\n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\nLili Fuhr\, Deputy Director\, Climate and Energy Program\, Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL)Marcia Ishii\, Senior Scientist\, Pesticide Action Network North AmericaMatt Rota\, Senior Policy Director\, Healthy GulfSophia Murphy\, Executive Director\, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP)\n\n\n\nModerator: Anna Lappé\, Director\, Food Sovereignty Fund of the Panta Rhea Foundation  \n\n\n\nQuestions?
