She has previously served on the House Rules Committee and Armed Services Committee. She currently sits on the powerful House Appropriations Committee\, serving on the Subcommittee on Agriculture\, Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment\, and Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. She also has a seat on the House Agriculture Committee. Chellie has been an advocate in Congress for reforming federal policy to better support the diverse range of American agriculture—including sustainable\, organic\, and locally focused farming—as well as to reduce food waste. Many provisions from comprehensive legislation she introduced to make these reforms were passed in both the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bills. She received a 2017 James Beard Leadership Award for her national leadership in food system reform. Chellie has also been recognized for her leadership on a number of other issues\, including assisting survivors of military sexual trauma\, strengthening the creative and arts economy\, and helping coastal communities address threats to their future. Chellie has three grown children–Asa\, Cecily\, and Hannah\, former Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by California Foodshed Funders and First Nations Development Institute \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with Environmental Grantmakers Association\, The Funders Network\, Funders for Regenerative Agriculture\, Health & Environmental Funders Network\, Justice Funders\, Native Americans in Philanthropy\, Native Voices Rising\, Neighborhood Funders Group\, and Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems Funders. \n\n\n\nAs the philanthropic community takes stock of the impact COVID-19 has on our operations and long-term strategies\, we must act now to move resources to communities who are hardest hit by the compounding impacts of this pandemic. \n\n\n\nCalifornia Foodshed Funders\, First Nations Development Institute\, and our national co-hosts invite you to join us for a conversation to make visible the people and issues facing Native American communities across the country as they endure this crisis. Taking the lead from our colleagues rooted in Indigenous Communities\, we will look at how this current crisis is made worse by generations of disinvestment of infrastructure and marginalization by mainstream institutions. In Navajo Nation alone\, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen beyond 1000; if it were a US state it would rank third in per-capita infection behind New York and New Jersey – yet the crises goes so much deeper than the rate of infection. \n\n\n\nJoin this webinar to hear from Indigenous leadership\, together with non–Native funders\, who aim to rise together in this moment and act together to support the health and emergency needs of Native Americans at the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. Acting now in courage and reciprocity will root strategies for resilience\, health\, biodiversity and ecological protection and so much more in the leadership of Indigenous communities who have too often been left out of mainstream philanthropy (receiving an average of .4% of the annual giving from large foundations). Through dialogue and action\, we will build relationships and share resources that will help us rise to the moment\, and serve us well beyond the COVID-19 crisis. \n\n\n\nThe final agenda will be sent to registered attendees one week prior to the webinar.
