Crop Insurance Reform and 2023 Farm Bill Opportunities

October 26, 2022 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm PDT

Join the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF), and the Funders for Regenerative Agriculture (FORA) for Funder Policy Briefing: Crop Insurance Reform and 2023 Farm Bill Opportunities.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) recently published a special report projecting billions in taxpayer savings over 10 years if payment caps are instituted on federal subsidies paid to farmers who purchase crop insurance. The report, An Economic Analysis of Payment Caps on Crop Insurance Subsidies, was written by Dr. Eric J. Belasco, a professor of agricultural economics at Montana State University who specializes in the study of federal agricultural support programs and risk management.

Our guest speakers will walk us through an overview of crop insurance and the findings of the report, as well as how it connects to the broader issues of climate change and conservation, access to land and equity within USDA resources. We will also discuss the narratives and political landscape for this issue and where philanthropic engagement can make a positive impact.

SPEAKERS:

  • Billy Hackett, policy specialist, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition
  • Dr. Eric J. Belasco, professor of agricultural economics, Montana State University
