Diverse capital partners within food and agriculture philanthropy are, by and large, systems-thinkers, working across the intersections of climate, justice, health, farming practices, and market infrastructure.

As a national network of over 120 members, SAFSF has a unique opportunity to track the nuanced funding practices of this interconnected sector. Each year, we collect data from our members on their funding scope, strategies, annual giving, high-level Areas of Impact, and corresponding sub-areas. Because our members represent a diverse cross-section of funding in this space, this self-reported dataset offers a meaningful window into broader trends in sustainable food and agriculture philanthropy and impact investment.

The six Areas of Impact in our taxonomy are:

We use this data to inform our own strategy and evaluation, and to surface trends that help the broader field understand where funding is headed and where the gaps remain.

Our first report examines how environmental and climate funding is understood and invested in across the SAFSF membership. We hope the insights offer food and agriculture funders perspective on their role in climate resilience and environmental sustainability, and offer climate-focused funders a clearer view of the dimensions of food and agriculture that drive positive climate outcomes.
